Why do I need a payment gateway service?
Secure online credit card processing is the accepted standard way to receive payments from customers purchasing your products or services. Your gateway service manages the process of validating the card used and forwarding payment to the bank account you designate. The service consists of a number of integrated components, including software, security/ fraud protection features, reporting capabilities, and support.

I already have merchant credit card account with my local bank - I can accept cards at my shop or on the phone. Do I still need a gateway, and can my bank provide that? If you have a favorable discount rate (the fee charged on each transaction) and relationship with your bank, you will still need a gateway service to process orders over the Internet. Most banks can refer to one they work with, and in fact many banks use Authorize.Net. But you are free to choose a gateway service that integrates well with your website.

What is the cost for using a gateway?
If you use the complete package, Authorize.Net charges $29 per month, plus a discount fee (under 3% ofr Visa/MasterCard/ Discover) plus a 30-cent per transaction charge. Funds are handled through a leading banking institution, such as Wells Fargo, and forwarded to your local account as directed. These fees are competitive and compare favorably with standard merchant account fees.

If you already have an existing merchant account with a favorable discount rate, you can use the gateway-only service for $20 per month, plus a 20-cent per transaction fee.

There is a one-time set-up fee of $149 for either type of gateway service account.

How long does it take for money to enter my account?
Two business days as a general rule. Once the card has been processed, your payment is assured and you can treat the transaction as 'paid.'

What about services like 'PayPal' - aren't those free?
PayPal does not charge a monthly fee and in some cases may be a good way to start out in online merchandising. But there are some drawbacks in using this type of service, including less control and flexibility over the process and more layers for the customer to deal with. With your own merchant account, the customer is dealing directly with you, not with a third-party payment service.
